Joseph Pilates: 1880 - 1967

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a physical fitness system developed in the early 20th century by German born Joseph Pilates, after whom it was named. It is now a hugely popular method of keeping fit and healthy which has been adopted worldwide.Pilates is seen as the art of controlled movements, Emphasis being placed on alignment, breathing, and developing a strong core.It also improves overall strength and flexibility and can reduce lower back pain and improve posture by strengthening the muscles that support the spine.

What is Mindful Pilates?

Mindfulness is the psychological process of bringing one's attention to experiences occurring in the present moment. It allows us to notice how things ‘really are’ and to cultivate attitudes that make us happier and healthier. These attitudes include being ‘non-judgmental’, being ‘kind to ourselves’ and learning to ‘accept’ and ‘let go’.Joseph Pilates rightly believed that mental and physical health was closely connected. As a Mindfulness teacher as well as a Pilates teacher I have discovered that combining these two effective systems has led to greater results for my clients in terms of physical and mental wellbeing.

My ethos is to create a Friendly, Happy environment in all my classes and workshops where everyone feels welcome and valued. Classes are currently being held in Armathwaite, Newbiggin, Aglionby (nr Carlisle) and Plumpton.

Prior to attending your first class you will be asked to fill out a short health questionnaire. This will help us to be aware of any health problems before you start your Pilates journey.

Numerous clients report feel better from the very first class and certainly within 5 weeks you will be reaping the benefits. The classes run in 5 week blocks and all mats and small equipment will be provided. The cost per class is £8.00 or £27.50 for the 5 week block.

One to One sessions

Some people prefer to have Personal attention while they are learning and find that attending one to one sessions is incredibly beneficial.

Maybe because they are a complete beginner and want to be guided through the basics more quickly, or because they wish to focus on a particular health or injury issues which can be done more effectively this way.

And some people want to practice Mindful Pilates to aid them in a particular sport or activity e.g. horse riding or football and want a tailor made program to meet their needs.

Or simply because class times are unsuitable for them.

Whatever your reason for wanting one to one sessions, I am happy to discuss your requirements directly with you. My fee is £40/hr at my home in Armathwaite or £50/hr at your home. Contact me to book any time

I run regular weekend workshops in all areas of Pilates and Mindfulness at The Eden workshop, Plumpton. This is a great little venue with fabulous views and even better food. These are morning or afternoon session run in groups of no more than eight.

The sessions give new people an opportunity to come and try out ‘what I do’. But it also gives regular clients the opportunity to experience things in a bit more detail and also to socialise with me and other clients.

I'm  a new member to Sally's beginners group in Newbiggin. Sally is enthusiastic about mindfulness and the benefits of relaxation, which has encouraged me to increase my practice of both. I've done pilates and mindfulness before, the classes are welcoming and Sally explains the moves with patience and ensures everyone is  ok. Last week I went to class feeling like an old woman, stiff and sore and didn't think I'd be able to do much, I came out an hour later feeling human again, more mobile and lighter. As a result, I've now signed up to some of the other mindfulness courses Sally offer and I'm looking forward to feeling a refreshed and less stressed.

I am a busy working mum with two young children. When I began Pilates I wanted to strengthen my core and generally feel healthier in myself. I enjoy attending Sally's Pilates classes and really feel that my fitness and strength is improving. Sally is very knowledgeable and supportive, the small and friendly classes offer me the perfect opportunity to have some 'me time' every week 😀

I have been doing Pilates with Sally for over a year and a half now and the results have been phenomenal.  Having suffered with a bad back for more than 10 years, last weekend I dug most of my veg patch in one go and no sore back! For years I rejected suggestions that Pilates might help me as it did not fit with my idea of exercise. You don't get sweaty and out of breath so it can't be doing any good...how wrong was I. Thank you Sally, it is not just me but my whole family are benefiting from your Pilates.

Hi Sally, thank you so much for such a lovely Pilates session last night! Just what I needed and I've got lots of "good" aches today so obviously working those muscles. Thank you again.
